Lead Steward
The Lead Steward coordinates and supports the work of all Area Stewards, serving as the primary resource for grievance handling and contract enforcement. Working on behalf of the membership and accountable to both the Executive Board and the members of the Local, the Lead Steward oversees the grievance process, including investigating, preparing, and presenting individual and group grievances. They ensure the collective agreement is upheld, stay informed on changes to labour legislation, provide guidance and training to Area Stewards, and keep members updated on the status of grievances. The Lead Steward also serves on the bargaining committee, helping to advocate for and protect the rights and interests of all CUPE 1317 members.

Area Stewards
Area Stewards are the first point of contact for members in their work locations. They play an important role in representing and supporting members by helping to enforce the collective agreement, investigating and presenting grievances at the initial stage in consultation with the Lead Steward, and keeping the Lead Steward informed throughout the grievance process. Area Stewards also promote member engagement by encouraging participation in union activities and ensuring members receive timely communication and important union information. They are accountable to both the Executive Board and the membership, working to protect members’ rights and strengthen our Local.
